Created by Mega Ran in 2013 to help increase awareness and highlight the contributions of Black and Brown faces in nerdy spaces, the Nerdy People of Color (NPC) Collective has served panels, concerts and programming to conventions and venues on all seven continents, adding teachers, musicians and even professional wrestlers to the stable. “When the Nerdcore Party Con — also shortened to NPC—- called me up, I knew this was fate.” Ran says. “ I had such a blast last year that I had to bring the crew this time, the stars just aligned for that to happen. Prince George’s County, Maryland-born MC, producer, artist, educator, and author Substantial, debuted in 2000 collaborating with the late Japanese producer, Nujabes, who later worked on the popular show Samurai Champloo. Legendary rapper and activist, Chuck D of Public Enemy referred to Substantial as “One of the great MCs of our time.” His soulful, introspective brand of Hip Hop music has received critical acclaim from Ebony.com, The Source Magazine, HipHopDX, DJBooth.net, and Okayplayer.com. His music videos have appeared on MTV, VH1, and BET. Substantial has performed in nearly 20 countries and has collaborated with artists such as Kool Herc, L-Universe better known as Verbal (M-Flo), Oddisee, Jeff Bernat, and more. Substantial has licensed music to major brands such as Ford Motor Company, Amazon, and UBER and also had his music featured in films and television shows such as Kevin Hart’s Laugh at My Pain, Kill Me 3 Times starring Simon Pegg, Daytime Emmy nominated show Tough Love and it’s spin-off series Pillow Talk. Substantial has appeared in the documentaries, Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme and Give Back. In 2019, Substantial wrote and produced music featured in the video game Renaine, to be released on the Nintendo Switch and the South Korean online game Tree of Savior. In 2020 and 2021, Substantial was featured on the songs, Loyal to the Beat, ManiFesto, and Renegade from the video game Arknights which was also nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Original Song - Video Game. Substantial also was featured on original songs for PUBG Mobile and their short film The Growth and later for their Tesla Collaboration theme song called Evolve in 2021 and wrote and performed rap vocals as Brody from the game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang for the song and video Together by the group S.T.U.N.
Shao Dow (sha-ow-dough) is an award-winning rapper, manga author and occasional ninja. After studying Shaolin Kung Fu with the monks whilst living in China, he utilized the tenacity and determination learnt from his martial arts training to independently forge his music career. Known to rap in both English and Japanese, Shao is hard to define as just a regular artist. He constantly blurs the lines between anime, gaming, martial arts and his own music and has worked with icons such as Sean Schemmel (voice of Goku - Dragon Ball Z) and featured on the first single from Tech N9ne’s ‘Asin9ne’ album. He also wrote an original track for the popular video game Fortnite’s ‘Mega City’ season update. 'Thunder Roll' was used in the official trailer and is one of the main in-game lobby themes and an emote. Alongside his regular releases, Shao works on the soundtrack for the 'Shaggy Ball Z vs One Jump Man' animated series with Mashed and Channel 4.The 3rd episode achieved more than 1 million YouTube views in 10 days. He created the music for a ‘God of War’ inspired animation (over 7 million views) that became the soundtrack for an official anniversary celebration video for the game’s sequel by Sony Santa Monica and PlayStation and his music was used during the ‘All or Nothing: Arsenal’ documentary about Arsenal FC by Amazon Prime Video. The epitome of an independent creative artist, Shao won the Hardest Working Artist award at the AIM Independent music Awards 2017 and was nominated for best live performer at the AIM Awards 2022 and 2023.
Kadesh Flow (Kansas City MO): "A propulsive emcee, a bold songwriter, a skilled trombonist, an auspicious producer and an enterprising artist" - 90.9 The Bridge Hailing from Kansas City, MO by way of Bromley, AL, Kadesh Flow is a rapper with an MBA & a trombone Super Saiyan. His wide reaching content hops from socioeconomic musings to life bars that are laced with anime and video game references, some of which have led to opportunities with outlets like Toonami, as well as various feature film projects. Desh has recorded as a studio trombonist with artists like Jidenna and boasts performances supporting artists such as Janelle Monae, Dave East, Rakim, Kool and the Gang, Trombone Shorty, The Revivalists, Tech N9ne, Naughty by Nature, and numerous other prolific acts. Kadesh is a member of the NPC (Nerdy People of Color) Collective, through which he is working to foster more representation for underrepresented and marginalized groups in “nerd” and “geek” spaces via performance, public speaking, and social engagement.
O_Super (Orlando, FL): O_Super is an experimental hip hop artist who draws influence from anime, hip hop, jazz, J-Pop, and golden age video games. O_Super has been performing as an independent artist, and is also the musical director for CEO Gaming, producing and releasing the yearly collaborative CEO Original Soundtrack since 2013, and the OST for their annual competitive anime fighting game series, CEOTaku. After featuring on frequent collaborator Mag.Lo’s viral hit “NEVER” (currently sitting at 94 MILLION streams on Spotify–that’s no typo), O_Super’s planning a series of releases this year, including an ode to Japanese date sims, an Animal Crossing-inspired EP, and other TBA projects slated for this year.
DJ ROCKMAN (Austin, TX) Vincent Banks, better known as DJ R.O.C.K.M.A.N., is an Austin, TX native who first touched a turntable at the early age of 3. Mentored by his father, a notable Hip-Hop DJ from California, Vince developed an early ear for doo-wop, funk, and classic hip-hop sounds which have stayed with him across the years.Since the early 2000s, Vince has been playing shows in and around Austin, TX with a specific focus on Nerdcore while also weaving in hip-hop, R&B, house, and DnB into his sets where appropriate. He’s opened for notable artists such as Quest Love, Mega Ran, Janet Jackson and Random Movement and he runs several recurring parties including Blaxiumum Overdrive, Nerdcore Night, and DJ Sessions. He is also a part of the Everyday Junglist, Drum-Soul, and The Friday Night Get Down crews and is the official DJ of Classic Game Fest.
RAISI-K (Albany, NY) Raisi K. That obscure producer you might have heard about. Raisi was viral before it was a thing, flipping classic video game samples into top notch hip-hop beats that your favorite rappers have freestyled on. Soundcloud legend by night, practicing lawyer by day.
K-Murdock Our host, K-Murdock (Washington, DC) Born & raised in Washington, DC, Kyle Murdock, who affectionately is called by many of his fans & friends “K”, is a self-proclaimed audio creative as well as a proud nerdy person of color! Murdock has worked professionally for the last 18 years as a producer in both the worlds of music and radio; From releasing critically acclaimed projects as a part of the group Panacea while signed to revered indie hip-hop label Rawkus Records to creating the audio profiles for XM Satellite Radio’s various hip-hop & jazz channels, K-Murdock’s self-proclaimed “Neosonic” (new-sound) productions have taken shape over the last decade and helped K not only garner respect from fans across the world but also collaborate with some of his favorite production contemporaries - DJ Spinna, DJ Nu-mark of Jurassic 5 & Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange as well as music legends like Wynton Marsalis & Quincy Jones. K’s abilities to successfully sample any & EVERYTHING he finds or is commissioned to have allowed him to work with a range of music artists including Grammy-nominated R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn to the Capcom-licensed emcee Mega Ran, whose music has helped galvanize the hip-hop sub-genre called “nerdcore". K, who majored in audio production while in school at Howard University, currently teaches classes in that very field at various universities in the Washington, DC area while continuing to work as a freelance audio producer & engineer, routinely doing work for a variety of notable individuals & companies. Additionally, the Red Bull Music Academy alumnus, also co-operates the imprint Random Beats Music along with the aforementioned artist Mega Ran, who he’s been creating music and touring the world with since 2010 when they released their love letter to the hip-hop & video game cultures, via the album Forever Famicom.
